Terminate that Mouth Odour Now! (The Art of Oral Hygiene)

Ok, let’s start this way. Mouth odour or bad breath (medically called halitosis) is a social malady. It is an embarrassment of the highest order that no amount of apology can recompense. I see good looking, well mannered and well dressed people everywhere. Sadly enough, some of these people are plagued with mouth odour when I go close to them to advance a conversion.

Am sorry I have to cheap this in here. There was this fateful day I came across a beautiful lady and I decided to accost her. To be frank, this lady looks beautiful and well dressed but as soon as i got close to her, the stench from her mouth was so bad and embarrassing that i had to end the discussion in a courteous manner not willing to cause any further embarrassment to her as per my nature.

I have thought so many times asking myself that why a sane human being would be alive and not dead and yet allow such humongous stench ooze out of the mouth.

One thing I have noticed about those suffering from mouth odour is that majority of them are not even aware that they have mouth odour. Probably, they are so used to the odour that they cannot perceive it any longer. What a shame! For some others, they don’t even have to open their mouth to perceive that stench- that is the effect of bad breath.

The smell usually oozes from either the mouth or the nose or even both at the same time. The intensity of the smell varies with individuals.

There are two simple methods to know that you are having mouth odour. First of all, take a thick clothing material and wrap your head and face in such a way that there is space between the clothing material and your mouth and nose. First of all breathe in and out in a quiet manner through the nose and patiently observe to perceive for smell that might ooze out from the nose.

Release the air from inside the enclosed material, then cover your face again and gently release air from the mouth while also carefully observing to perceive smells. Repeat this action over again until you are able to discern the status of your breathe.

The second way is to rub your tongue on the back of your palm, allow it to dry a little and then smell it. This way, you should be able to test the status of your breath and the cleanness of your mouth. Other ways include asking a very close and trusted friend to help smell the breath from your nose and mouth or even breathing into your folded palms.

Mouth odour can be caused by poor oral hygiene. That is, inadequate or improper washing of the mouth. Here, the mouth is not well taken care of thereby resulting in serious smell. It could be due to internal ailments such as respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, chronic sinus infections, and postnasal drip), diabetes and gastro intestinal disorders (stomach ulcers).

It can signal some medical issues with the liver, lungs or kidney. It could be caused by the kind of foods eaten such as garlic, onions and some meals that are not properly chewed. It could be caused by dry mouth (also called xerostomia) due to long time closure of mouth or fasting. It could be caused by tooth decay or hole in the tooth.

The effect of mouth odour could be humiliating and embarrassing. It could be so bad that it can ridicule one’s social relationships and lower the self esteem of the sufferer. It makes people look on the sufferer as one who is dirty. People begin to withdraw from the sufferer.

The sufferer if he/she knows about the mouth odour will begin to avoid social gatherings or sitting close to others to avoid embarrassment. Mouth odour sours people’s love life when the partner feels so discomforted by the stench. Do you know that even kids get pissed off by an adult’s mouth odour? Mouth odour is never a respecter of age and status, whether rich or poor, educated or uneducated. It only respects people who are committed to getting rid of it on daily basis. Everyone should be concerned about their oral health.
