One killed, others injured in Ghana football team bus crash [Update]

One person has been confirmed dead and several players including the coach of Ghana’s premier league club Asante Kotoko have sustained severe injuries following an accident late Wednesday night at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

“We regret to announce that, our Deputy Equipment Officer, Kofi Asare could not make it. Management has met his family to brief them of the sad event. Meanwhile, Head Coach, Steven Polack; midfielder, Ollennu Ashitey and the bus driver, Nana Berkye are on admission receiving treatment,” the club said in a statement on Thursday.

Some members of the team were trapped in the bus after the crash and their colleagues who were following the bus in a convoy helped rescue them, local media report.
The actual number of the injured is unknown but the club said it will follow-up on all the treated and discharged victims for thorough examination.
The team was returning from a premier league fixture against Accra-based Inter Allies football club which beat them by a goal to nil.
Kotoko confirmed the accident via its Twitter page saying some of the team members were receiving treatment at a hospital in the town.
