Two hours of rain in northern Ghana on Tuesday left towns inaccessible after floods destroyed bridges and roads linking to the rest of the country.
According to local media Citifmonline, the floods that claimed the lives of two people cut off major roads in the Nanumba North and South districts due to collapsed bridges and dams.
The local authorities appealed for help from the government as farmlands and crops have also been washed away leaving the predominantly farming communities with no source of livelihood.
“As we speak now there is nothing at the assembly’s accounts. We are looking up to the central government to immediately come to our aid,” said the Nanumba North Chief Executive, Abdulai Yaqoub.

Ghana’s vice president Mahamudu Bawumia visited the affected areas on Wednesday and said the government will demolish building and structures on waterway as part of the solutions.
He expressed condolences to the bereaved families including his classmate Hajia Fati Bapuni who drowned after the water whisked her away while driving.
Flooding is perennial in northern and southern Ghana where hundreds have died in the past years. It is often blamed on choked drainage due to improper disposal of waste.
