UN report reveals Rwanda trained rebels to oust Nkurunziza

A confidential report to the United Nations Security Council is accusing Rwanda of aiding rebels in Burundi early this year with the aim of ousting President Pierre Nkurunziza.

The report says Rwanda provided training, financing and logistical support to the rebels amid the conflict that rocked the East African nation due to President Nkurunziza’s controversial election for a third term in office.

A panel of six independent experts appointed by the UN reported that 18 Burundian combatants in eastern Congo said they had been recruited in a refugee camp in Rwanda in mid-2015.

The recruits were then trained by instructors, who included Rwandan military personnel.

Rwanda has repeatedly strongly denied these claims. The findings contradict suggestions from Western officials, who said Rwandan support for Burundian rebels appeared to have ceased last year.
