The most Tolerant Country in Africa: Namibia

 


A local media report quoting a survey by Afrobarometer has categorized Namibia as the most tolerant country in Africa.
Afrobarometer is a pan-African, non-partisan research network that conducts public attitude surveys on democracy, governance, economic conditions, and related issues across more than 30 countries in Africa.
Namibia was followed by Malawi and Burundi with Niger, Tunisia and Morocco, respectively, coming last on the list.
Different questions that captured levels of tolerance towards different ethnic groups, different religions, immigrants, people living with HIV/Aids, and gays and lesbians were asked to respondents.
“Namibians showed high degrees of tolerance towards other ethnicities (96%), religions (96%), people living with HIV/Aids (94%), and only slightly less tolerance for immigrants and foreign workers (85%).”
The Sun newspaper, quoting the Afrobarometer pointed out that homophobia persisted in Namibia.
The survey was conducted in 33 countries in 2014 and 2015.
