Congo: Civil activists push for release of colleagues and 'political prisoners'


A section of civil rights activists in the Republic of Congo are no relenting in their quest to demand for the release of fellow activists, who they say have been arrested over the last ten days. The arrested were protesting to demand the release of those whom they consider political prisoners.
On 7 May in Pointe Noire, 20 activists from the Ras-le-Bol civil movement were arrested in front of the Pointe-Noire high court.

President Kenyatta says the new law will help prosecute cyber criminals
A new law in Kenya is the latest in East Africa to punish the spreading of "false information" and impose a lengthy jail term on offenders.
It proposes a fine of $50,000 (£37,000) and/or up to two years in prison for publishing "false" information.
The Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes law also criminalises abuse on social media and cyber bullying.

Myanmar violence: Thousands flee fresh fighting in Kachin state

At least 10,000 people are believed to have fled their homes in Kachin this year
Thousands of people have fled renewed fighting between the army and ethnic Kachin rebels in Myanmar's northernmost state.
Some 4,000 people have been driven from their homes since early April, according to the UN.
It comes as a longstanding conflict between the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) and government troops escalates.

After a week of controversial Twitter postings, Kanye West has defended his support of the US president in a new song.
The track Ye vs. The People sees the star trading lyrics with fellow-rapper T.I., who takes him to task over his support of Donald Trump.
"You representin' dudes who seem crude and cold-hearted," argues T.I., adding that West is emboldening "white supremacy".

Koreas summit: North Korean media hail 'historic' meeting

Friday's summit between the leaders of North and South Korea was a "historic meeting" paving the way for the start of a new era, North Korea's media say.
The North's Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in of South Korea agreed to work to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons.
In a rare move, state-run TV and the official KCNA news agency hailed the talks and the leaders' commitment to seek "complete denuclearisation".
