China accuses US of 'Cold War mentality' over nuclear policy

China has urged the US to drop its "Cold War mentality" after Washington said it planned to diversify its nuclear armoury with smaller bombs.
"The country that owns the world's largest nuclear arsenal, should take the initiative to follow the trend instead of going against it," China's defence ministry said on Sunday.

Deepfakes porn has serious consequences

In recent weeks there has been an explosion in what has become known as deepfakes: pornographic videos manipulated so that the original actress' face is replaced with somebody else's.
As these tools have become more powerful and easier to use, it has enabled the transfer of sexual fantasies from people's imaginations to the internet. It flies past not only the boundaries of human decency, but also our sense of believing what we see and hear.
Beyond its use for hollow titillation, the sophistication of the technology could bring about serious consequences. The fake news crisis, as we know it today, may only just be the beginning.

Kenyans react to having two presidents, Gambia had same in 2017


Kenyans on social media are reacting to a political situation that has “blessed” the country with two presidents.
The constitutionally recognized president is Uhuru Kenyatta who took office in November 2017 after winning a presidential poll rerun ordered by the court in September 2017.
But on Tuesday (January 30) Uhuru’s main rival and former prime minister, Raila Amolo Odinga also took an presidential oath of office in the capital Nairobi amid a government ban.

Algerian, South African scientists scoop AU accolades


Algerian professor Malik Maaza and South Africa’s Professor Robert Peter Miller have been honoured with 2017 Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Awards at the just concluded African Union (AU) Summit.
The accolade is awarded annually to African researchers and scientists for their research in various fields of technology and the social sciences.
Maaza was honoured by the African Union and UNESCO for his nanotechnology research in South Africa where he runs a research centre in Pretoria, while Peter Miller was recognised in the category of Earth and Life Sciences.

Rihanna tweets at world leaders, seeks $3.1b to fund education


In a bid to raise $3.1 billion to fund education for children in the world’s poorest countries, celebrated pop star has been tweeting at leaders of Western powers including the United kIngdom, France and Australia, asking them to pledge support.
Rihanna is attending an international education summit in Dakar, Senegal.
Over the past few years, the “Wild Thoughts” singer has been working with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) through her Clara Lionel Foundation to fund education for girls in Africa, the Caribbean, and America.
