Sudan's deputy opposition leader arrested following anti-gov't protest


Sudanese security agents have arrested the deputy head of the country’s main opposition Umma Party after it held anti-government rallies to protest rising food prices, the party said on Friday.
Sporadic demonstrations have hit Khartoum and some other parts of Sudan since early January after prices of food, notably bread, more than doubled following a jump in the cost of flour.

Tariq Ramadan charged in France over rape allegations

A French judge has placed prominent Islamic studies scholar Tariq Ramadan under criminal investigation on two charges of rape.
The 55-year-old was questioned by police in Paris earlier this week and has now been remanded into custody.
He denies wrongdoing and is suing one of his accusers, a former radical Islamist, for slander.
Mr Ramadan teaches at Oxford University, but took leave of absence after the claims surfaced in October.

Researchers have found more than 60,000 hidden Maya ruins in Guatemala in a major archaeological breakthrough.
Laser technology was used to survey digitally beneath the forest canopy, revealing houses, palaces, elevated highways, and defensive fortifications.
The landscape, near already-known Maya cities, is thought to have been home to millions more people than other research had previously suggested.

Dow sees sharpest drop since June 2016

The blue chip Dow Jones Industrial Average suffered its steepest decline since June 2016 on Friday, amid wider losses in US markets.
The fall came after a string of disappointing earnings reports from giants such as Apple.
Strong wage growth in the latest payrolls data also spooked investors raising the possibility of higher interest rates than expected.

Temptations singer Dennis Edwards dies aged 74

Dennis Edwards, who performed as lead singer for the Motown group the Temptations, has died at aged 74.
He died in Chicago, his family told CBS News. They did not disclose the cause of death.
Edwards joined the Temptations in 1968 and had a number of hits including two Grammy award-winning songs, Papa Was a Rollin' Stone and Cloud Nine.
