Mozambique urged to investigate rights abuses before 2016 ceasefire


A Human Rights Watch (HRW) report released on Friday is calling for justice in Mozambique over violence that intensified between government forces and rebels, before a ceasefire deal was agreed.
The report titled ‘State security forces and Renamo abuses in Mozambique’ highlights killings and torture meted out by both sides between November 2015 and December 2016 as the country appeared at risk of returning to its long bloody civil war.

Uganda recalls envoy to U.S. for beating wife


Uganda has recalled its deputy ambassador to the United States after the US State Department kicked him out for beating his wife.
Dickson Ogwang was asked to leave Washington DC after he reportedly invoked diplomatic immunity to avoid prosecution.
Confirming the incident, Uganda’s deputy minister for International Affairs, Okello Oryem, said “it is unfortunate”.

African ministers meet over AU financing model



African finance ministers will meet in Rwanda on Saturday to review progress on the implementation of the 0.2% levy on imports aimed at fully financing the African Union (AU).
The funding model was adopted during a Heads of State and Government Summit in Kigali, Rwanda in July 2016.
The same summit elected Rwanda’s Paul Kagame to take over from Alpha Code of Guinea as AU chair and when he effectively took over on January 1, 2018, his task is clear; steer the continental body away from heavy dependence on aid.

AU demands apology from Trump over 'shithole' comment


The African Union Mission in Washington DC has condemned Donald Trump’s derogatory statements allegedly made about Africa and Haiti.
In a statement released on Friday, the mission expressed its disappointment in the president of the United States and demanded a ‘retraction of the comment’ and an ‘apology to Africans’.
‘‘The African Union Mission condemns the comments in the strongest terms and demands a retraction of the comment as well as an apology to not only the Africans but to all people of African descent around the globe,’‘ reads the statement.

Africa calls Trump racist after "shithole" remark


African politicians labelled U.S. President Donald Trump a racist on Friday after he was reported to have described some immigrants from Africa and Haiti as coming from “shithole” countries.
Sources told Reuters on Thursday that Trump had questioned why the United States would want immigrants from “shithole countries” like Haiti and some African countries during a briefing on draft immigration legislation.
